Off-road vehicles

Legal age for driving a snowmobile or ATV

You can drive an off-road vehicle if you are aged 16 and over. However, you must have the necessary certificates.

Wearing a helmet

Regardless where you off road with your snowmobile or ATV, you must wear a protective helmet. Not only is it required by law, but it’ll prevent head injuries. Are you riding without a protective helmet? You could be fined $100.

Mandatory certificate of competence

You must have a certificate of competence if you are aged 16 or 17. Are you driving without this certificate? Then you risk a fine of $100 for a violation.

To obtain your mandatory certificate of competence, you must take a driving course. These courses are offered by a Quebec government-accredited agency.

Transporting a passenger on an ATV

Want to take a friend on your ATV. You must be at least 18 years of age to do so.
