Prevention tips

  • If you're a smoker, always be careful. Never smoke in bed. Use only deep, stable ashtrays and wet butts before disposing of them.
  • Don't play with fire. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Have chimney flues inspected and cleaned regularly, especially if you heat with oil, coal or wood.
  • Use a fire screen in front of your fireplace opening to prevent sparks from landing on floors and carpets.
  • Never leave a candle burning unattended.
  • Regularly dispose of anything that could cause a fire, including flammable paints or solvents you no longer need, stacks of papers, etc.
  • Don't leave any combustibles in the furnace room.
