ATVs and insurance: why it’s important to adjust your coverage

Do you own an all-terrain vehicle? As we head into summer, it’s important to check the coverage provided under your insurance policy. Reassess your needs and discuss them with your agent or broker to adjust your policy.

“There are a number of reasons why your ATV insurance policy might need to be adjusted. For example, your son is now old enough to drive and has his certificate of competence. Or you’re going trail-riding in the U.S.,” noted Jack Chadirdjian, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Relations at Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The importance of ATV insurance

The Société d’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) does not provide compensation in case of bodily injury. Except in very specific circumstances, it’s your insurer who pays for bodily injury caused to a third party and for which you are liable.

And what if you’re injured? It’s up to you to check whether you have the appropriate coverage so that you’re well protected.

The cost of ATV insurance

Four factors influence your insurance premium:

  1. The ATV you choose
  2. Your place of residence and use of the ATV
  3. Your profile
  4. The coverage selected

Talk to your agent or broker. He’ll let you know which coverage best meets your needs.

                                                                      Don’t neglect these measures

To fully enjoy your outdoor sport, think safety!

  1. Wear a helmet and the right clothing, gloves and footwear.
  2. Carry a basic survival kit. Your cell phone may not work off the beaten track. It’s recommended that you carry a topographic map or GPS receiver.
  3. Use ATV trails.
  4. Stay on the right-hand side of the trail.
  5. Slow down, especially at night.
  6. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Safe driving!
