Your insurance claims record
Your insurance company takes the time to assess your driving history. To do so, it consults your record in the Fichier central des sinistres automobiles (FCSA), an automobile claims database that you too can consult.
- The FCSA is a central register containing records of all claims you have been involved in over the last six years, whether you were deemed at fault or not. This includes accidents, broken windshields, thefts, etc.
- Insurers consult the claims database to determine your risk level as a driver. Just made your fifth claim in three years? There's no denying you're somewhat of a road risk, and the cost of your insurance will be affected!
- What about other people's driving? You could be responsible for that, too. For example, if you lend your car to your neighbor and he has an accident, the loss will be listed not only in his record, but yours as well.
- Want to consult your record? Write to the Groupement des assureurs automobiles and be sure to sign your request and enclose a photocopy of your driver's license.
- Think your record contains errors? Ask the Groupement des assureurs automobiles to check its information on you. If necessary, it will make corrections.
